16 February 2012

How lucky we are in Cape Town to have access to so many brilliant authors and book lovers. This month alone, Kalk Bay Books has had the privilege of hosting well-known CapeTalk presenter John Maytham, and local author Finuala Dowling, at a bicentenial celebration of the life of Charles Dickens. The audience were completely mesmerised by John's readings of some of Dickens's best works, while Finuala interjected with pithy, witty, and fascinating titbits about the man himself.

Then, on the day of writing, we are setting up for another celebration of a life - that of South African poet Ingrid Jonker. Two of the city's best poets, Antjie Krog and Ingrid de Kok, will read from the poems, in Afrikaans and English, while Professor Louise Viljoen, will provide a biographical and historical context to the works. The audience will also hear the voice of Jonker herself, when recordings of her reading her own poetry are played.

We hope to see you soon
Ann and the team

Blending deep respect with total impiety, De Botton (a non-believer himself) proposes that we should look to religions for insights into, among other concerns, how to:
